The Centre for Research, Training and publications (CRTP) conducted a training on economic recovery in Migori County as part of initiatives for Environmental Advocacy Support in Extractives Industries (EASEI). The training program focused on a group of small -scale farmers and artisanal miners who are part of an ongoing two years projects by CRTP at Hekima University College. The training covered the following thematic areas

  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies
  • Agroforestry
  • Agribusiness Maximization

The purpose of the training was to

  1. To equip the participants with skills, and strategies on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change for environmental protection and management
  2. To train the participants on agribusiness maximization to promote alternative income generating activities as a source of income as oppose to gold mining
  3. To promote mixed farming practices through agroforestry

During the training deforestation emerged as a major challenge to climate change adaptation and mitigation, due to mining activity which is a major economic activity in the region. This equally has negative impact on agroforestry in the advancement of economic recovery in the region.
