From 26th–28th April 2026, Center for Research Training and Publication (CRTP) led by Prof, Elias Opongo conducted a research in Kisumu to explore the role of religious leaders and civil society organizations in influencing positive online behavior among Kenyan youth. The research used Key Informant Interviews (KII) and Focus Group Discussions in data collection, the research invoved 11 participants among them were youth leaders, students, content creators, religious representatives, and civil society actors, the highlights was the growing influence of youth-led digital campaigns in shaping civic participation and social awareness. Participants reflected on the role of online platforms in mobilizing civic action, particularly during major national conversations, while also emphasizing the increasing use of digital tools to verify information and promote informed engagement.
The research underscored the importance of strengthening digital literacy and responsible online engagement among young people. Participants emphasized the role of families, schools, faith-based institutions, and civil society in nurturing ethical digital behavior, while raising awareness about online risks such as cyberbullying, misinformation, and cybercrime. The discussions further called for greater involvement of religious and community leaders in addressing societal concerns affecting youth, alongside efforts to promote balanced and mindful use of technology for positive social impact.
