The Centre for Research, Training and Publications (CRTP) conducted a training on Conflict Management in Mining Sites and Environmental Advocacy in Migori County as part of its capacity-building efforts under the Environmental Advocacy Support in Extractive Industries (EASEI) project. The workshop, facilitated by Dr. Michael Owiso, took place over two days from 20th to 21st May 2025.
A total of 16 participants attended the training, representing the four groups CRTP has been working with in the implementation of the EASEI project, aimed at promoting environmental conservation and protection.
The training covered the following thematic areas:
- Conflict Management and Resolution in Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Communities
- Conflict Analysis Tools and Frameworks
- Environmental Advocacy in the ASM Sector
- Identifying Environmental Challenges in the ASM Sector in Migori
- Sharing Experiences in Environmental Advocacy
The objectives of the training were:
- To equip participants with conflict management skills applicable in mining sites
- To provide a platform for shared learning and action planning
- To enhance participants’ skills in advocating for environmental sustainability
- To train participants on relevant policies and frameworks related to mining, environmental protection, and conservation
- To promote participants’ understanding of environmental sustainability
The participants expressed their gratitude to CRTP for organizing the training and for its continued partnership, particularly through initiatives such as tree planting and environmental conservation. They also emphasized their hope for ongoing collaboration and support from CRTP in future trainings and community-based projects. The participants expressed optimism that such engagements will not only enrich their knowledge and skills but also strengthen their collective efforts in addressing local challenges
